BBVA rolls out ChatGPT Enterprise in global AI banking push

BBVA, a global banking group, has announced a major expansion of its collaboration with OpenAI through a multi-year strategic programme centred on artificial intelligence.

The reason for launching this new initiative is to accelerate BBVA’s transition towards AI-native banking. The bank is seeking to enhance customer experiences, introduce new ways of working for employees and optimise internal operations at scale.

BBVA operates across 25 countries and serves millions of retail and corporate customers through a broad portfolio of financial services.

ChatGPT Enterprise will now be rolled out to all 120,000 BBVA employees worldwide. This represents a tenfold increase on the bank’s current deployment.

Beyond employee access, the collaboration will support the creation of new AI-powered solutions designed to improve customer interactions, support bankers in advising clients, streamline and enhance risk analysis and redesign internal processes such as software development and employee productivity tools.

OpenAI will also work with BBVA on specialised training programmes and a structured adoption model to ensure consistent and secure use of the technology.

This expansion builds on nearly two years of proven results. BBVA first began working with OpenAI in May 2024, initially rolling out 3,300 ChatGPT accounts. Following early success, usage expanded to 11,000 employees, with thousands of custom GPTs created. Employees reportedly saved close to three hours per week on routine tasks, while more than 80% engaged with the tools on a daily basis.

Our alliance with OpenAI accelerates the native integration of artificial intelligence across the bank to create a smarter, more proactive, and completely personalized banking experience, anticipating the needs of every client.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “BBVA is a strong example of how a large financial institution can adopt AI with real ambition and speed. With this expansion of our work together, BBVA will embed our AI into the core of their products and operations to enhance the overall banking experience for their customers.”
