Thunes expands US footprint with strategic Tilia acquisition

Thunes has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Tilia, a comprehensive payments platform specializing in the online gaming sector.

Thunes, known for its extensive network that facilitates real-time payments across various global channels, aims to consolidate its growth in the United States through this acquisition. Tilia, licensed across 48 U.S. states and territories, offers robust payment solutions including acceptance and payouts tailored for online games, virtual worlds, creator economies, and in-app purchases.

The acquisition is strategically aimed at accelerating Thunes’ growth in the US and expanding its influence in the rapidly growing online gaming market. Although the specific value of the deal was not disclosed, the transaction is pending regulatory approvals and is set to significantly enhance Thunes’ payment capabilities in the US.

Thunes operates a bespoke global network enabling merchants worldwide to send and receive payments through four billion bank accounts, three billion digital wallets, and 550 alternative payment methods (APMs). Tilia, on the other hand, focuses on facilitating transactions within online games and virtual environments, providing seamless payment experiences for users and merchants alike.

Post-acquisition, Tilia will be rebranded as Thunes and will continue to operate from its headquarters in San Francisco. The merger promises enhanced payment processing capabilities and a broader service offering to current Tilia and Thunes customers across the United States.

Additionally, Thunes has entered into an exclusive five-year partnership with Linden Research, Inc. (“Linden Lab”), the previous majority owner of Tilia. This partnership will ensure that post-acquisition, Linden Lab will continue to receive advanced payment processing solutions from Thunes, improving the payment efficiency and transparency for gamers.

“Thunes CEO Floris de Kort said, “The acquisition of Tilia demonstrates our ambition in the United States. This investment will enable us to leverage Tilia’s capabilities to provide merchants with direct money movement solutions in and out of the United States. Furthermore, Tilia’s deep expertise in online gaming, virtual worlds and token-based payments will greatly accelerate our growth into that fast-growing, exciting industry.” Linden Lab CEO Brad Oberwager said, “Thunes is an exceptional company that directly connects nearly every payment method and market worldwide. The combination of Tilia and Thunes will give Linden Lab’s customers more payment choices, and the ability to receive payouts in real time, anywhere, into the wallet or bank account of their choice. It will be business as usual for our people and our customers as we bring Tilia and Thunes together.”
