SumUp targets Canada’s small business payments gap

SumUp, a global FinTech company serving over four million merchants worldwide, has officially entered Canada, marking its 38th operational market and its most recent expansion across the Americas.

The company is launching with two products tailored to the needs of small business operators: the SumUp Go card reader, a compact device for in-person transactions, and Payment Links, which enables merchants to collect payments remotely without requiring any hardware. The SumUp Go reader involves no monthly fixed costs and is designed to be operational immediately, while Payment Links allow merchants to generate and share secure payment requests via text, email or social media.

Canada’s business landscape presents a significant opportunity for the company. Of the country’s 1.1 million employing businesses, 98.2% are classified as small businesses, many of which face unnecessary friction in their day-to-day payment processes. The two products together are intended to offer these merchants a single, cohesive solution covering both face-to-face and remote sales.

The broader market context supports the timing of the move. Canada’s payments sector is projected to reach $3.47bn by 2031, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 15.92% between 2026 and 2031. Cash use is declining while digital payment adoption continues to accelerate, and small business owners are increasingly seeking payment solutions that align with how they actually operate.

Founded in 2012, SumUp supports small merchants across its three core pillars of payments, point-of-sale, and account and card services. The company’s stated mission is to level the playing field for businesses of all sizes, and it pledges 1% of net revenue generated by Solo devices to environmental causes, alongside support for educational and entrepreneurial initiatives globally.

SumUp has indicated that its Canadian product offering will evolve over time, guided by direct feedback from merchants on what they need most. The company plans to grow its local portfolio in step with that input.

SumUp North America CEO Andrew Helms said, “Launching in Canada is a natural next step in SumUp’s growth across North America. Canada has an incredibly vibrant small business community and we see a huge opportunity to give these merchants the tools they need to thrive, without the complexity or hidden costs they have come to expect from legacy providers. At SumUp, we’re in it for the merchant. When they succeed, we succeed.”
