Timex teams with FinTechs to unveil range of contactless payment watches

Watchmaker Timex has partnered with Visa, Tappy and J.P Morgan subsidiary Chase to launch watch straps that can be used to conduct contactless payments.

The range of watches – labelled Timex Pay – will come with a payments chip inbuilt into the strap meaning batteries and charging are not required. A range of leather, silicone and fabric watch straps can be used to add to existing Timex watches will be available either from Timex directly or from Amazon.

To use the watch, users will be required to download a Timex Pay app and link it to a Chase Visa credit or debit card to make contactless payments.

According to Timex, the company first teamed up with Hong Kong-located technology firm Tappy last year to develop the watch. Tappy previously developed token payments technology that is able to turn any watch into a credit or debit card.

Back in 2019, Cambridge-based startup DressCode unveiled CashCuff, a shirt that has contactless payments tailored into the cuffs.
