US offers $15m bounty to track down Conti ransomware group leaders

The US government has revealed it is willing to put a total of $15m to track down the leaders of the Conti ransomware gang.

According to Security Week, the government claimed it is willing to pay up to $10m for information leading to the identification and/or location of anyone holding a key leadership role in the group.

In addition, the US State Department said it is offering up to $5m for information that leads to the arrest and/or conviction of any individual in any countries that is conspiring to participate in or attempting to participate in a Conti variant ransomware incident.

The initiative – which will be offered under the Department of State’s Transnational Organised Crime Rewards Program – aims to damage the Conti ransomware group, which the State Department remarked has been responsible for hundreds of ransomware incidents over the past two years.

As an example, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the Conti gang issued a statement suggesting that they were backing the Russian government. However, they later clarified that they condemned the war and were not allies of any government.

The group also recently launched a heavy cyberattack on the computer systems of the Costa Rican government in April 2022.
