Nvidia, a global AI chip supplier, has joined forces with Reliance Industries, a prominent Mumbai-based multinational, to elevate India’s AI infrastructure.
The core objective of this partnership is to construct AI supercomputers in India which are “over an order of magnitude more powerful” than the current best in the country. Furthermore, the collaboration aspires to develop India’s own expansive language models, tailored specifically to its diverse linguistic landscape and the unique needs of its citizens.
Nvidia, known as the world’s top AI chip supplier, plays a vital role in providing advanced technology for AI infrastructures globally. Their portfolio includes the GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and the Nvidia DGX Cloud, an advanced AI cloud supercomputing service. On the other hand, Reliance Industries, a major multinational based in Mumbai, has its telecom arm, Jio, which will take on the responsibility of managing the development of the Nvidia-powered AI infrastructure in India. Their focus areas include agriculture, medicine, weather forecasting, and disaster preparedness.
This groundbreaking partnership announcement follows a crucial meeting between Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They discussed the vast potential India holds in AI development and Nvidia’s significant role in this evolution.
Nvidia, already a key player in the Indian market, employs approximately 3,800 professionals across its four engineering development centres located in Bengaluru, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Pune. India is home to 22 officially recognised languages, including but not limited to Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Sindhi.
Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said, “We are delighted to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India. India has scale, data and talent. With the most advanced AI computing infrastructure, Reliance can build its own large-language models that power generative AI applications made in India, for the people of India.”
