Boards across financial services are no longer debating whether to use AI, but how quickly they can put it into production.
Executives see opportunities to speed up investigations, streamline monitoring, and reduce the drag of manual checks. At the same time, supervisors are paying closer attention to where models sit in decision-making and whether firms can demonstrate control.
Compliance, however, is not just another workflow to automate. In a regulated environment, AI has to be precise, predictable, and provable. If a system influences a compliance-critical decision, the organisation needs to explain what happened, show why it happened, and evidence that it happened consistently under defined controls.
That’s where much of today’s “AI-native” excitement can become a risk. Models that rely on probabilistic reasoning or generative output may be useful for drafting, summarising, or ideation, but they can produce variable results from the same prompt. In compliance contexts, that variability can create uncertainty around audit trails, defensibility, and repeatability—exactly the areas regulators and internal risk teams scrutinise most.
A recent whitepaper by Red Oak positions this as a foundational mismatch: predictive and generative approaches are built to estimate or infer, while compliance functions are built to evidence and verify. When the goal is to prove adherence to rules, policies, and regulatory expectations, guesswork—however sophisticated—can quickly become an unacceptable operational and governance burden.
Red Oak argues for a different path it calls Compliance-Grade AI, described as an architectural approach designed around auditability, transparency, and control. The core idea is that compliance-focused AI should prioritise determinism, traceability, and constrained actions, so that automation delivers efficiency without introducing new conduct or regulatory risk.
The paper also highlights Red Oak’s claim that it leverages 15+ years of real-world compliance data to drive measurable efficiency gains. It frames adoption as a tactical exercise: deploying AI where it can reliably reduce workload, while maintaining clear oversight, documentation, and guardrails aligned with regulated decision-making.
