French insurers are moving beyond the question of whether to use artificial intelligence and towards a more difficult one: how to make it work across the business without losing control over decisions.
That shift was a central theme at Earnix’s first France-focused Eˣcelerate event, held in Paris on 23 July 2026.
The event brought together insurance executives, technology leaders and industry experts to examine how insurers can modernise decision-making across pricing, underwriting and customer engagement.
A key focus was how insurers can introduce greater automation into processes without losing transparency or appropriate human oversight. Executives from Crédit Agricole Assurances and Alptis discussed where automated decisions, technology-assisted judgement and human expertise should sit within underwriting workflows.
The question becomes more pressing as insurers contend with risks that are increasingly difficult to assess. Representatives from Groupe Covéa, Matmut, CCR and the Institut des Actuaires examined how the industry can improve its approach to emerging risks, including climate and cyber.
Data and decisioning infrastructure also featured prominently throughout the event. Insurers need to connect analytics and business rules with the processes where decisions are ultimately made, rather than treating these capabilities as separate parts of the organisation.
Four themes emerged repeatedly across the sessions: strengthening governance and transparency, modernising underwriting and pricing, improving the data foundations behind decision-making, and preparing organisations for continued transformation as regulation and customer expectations evolve.
For Earnix, its AIOS platform is designed to support this shift by bringing together data, analytics, business rules and human expertise within what the company describes as a unified decisioning layer. The platform is intended to help insurers turn information into consistent and governed decisions across the enterprise.
The event brought together a broad group of insurance and actuarial leaders. Speakers included Groupe Covéa chief data officer Arthur Dénouveaux, Matmut transformation director François-Xavier Enderle, Groupe Crédit Agricole Assurances chief data & AI officer Aldrick Zappellini, Alptis digital & transformation director Véronique Pachoud, Institut des Actuaires president Simon Le Dily and CCR CEO Edouard Vieillefond.
Their discussions reflected a wider shift in how insurers are approaching operational transformation. Rather than focusing on individual technology projects, the emphasis was on how new capabilities can work alongside existing underwriting processes, data, business rules and human decision-making.
France provides an important backdrop to these discussions. Earnix described the country as one of Europe’s largest and most regulated insurance markets, with the event delivered entirely in French and shaped around the specific issues facing the domestic market.
However, the issues raised in Paris extend beyond France. Earnix said insurers across Europe are facing similar pressures from regulatory scrutiny, increasingly complex risk environments and changing expectations around how insurance decisions are made.
The event offered a view of how the insurance sector is approaching the next stage of operational transformation. The focus is increasingly moving towards the infrastructure behind decision-making, with data, governance and business rules becoming central to how insurers improve the consistency and speed of their operations.
