Sumsub fights deepfake menace with enhanced detection technology

Sumsub, a prominent player in the anti-fraud industry, continues to strengthen its position, announcing the launch of an enhanced deepfakes detection tool.

The company made its mark with robust identity verification and Know Your Customer (KYC) solutions, trusted by businesses worldwide.

In response to a dramatic rise in deepfake-based identity fraud – Sumsub’s data points to a Q1 2023 surge that exceeded all of 2022 – the company has made significant updates to its already established anti-fraud arsenal. Recognising the evolving threat landscape, the new product focuses on bolstering Sumsub’s in-house liveness solution, a cornerstone of its KYC procedures.

Operating at the forefront of the fight against online fraud, Sumsub offers an advanced suite of anti-fraud tools. The firm’s proprietary liveness technology has been the first line of defence for businesses against identity theft. With an integral focus on facial biometrics, the technology ensures real-time verification of users, creating a secure and accessible digital environment for businesses.

The newly unveiled deepfake fraud detector raises the bar for fraud prevention. Integrating seamlessly into Sumsub’s liveness solution, it leverages the latest advancements in artificial intelligence to detect and thwart deepfakes. With this enhanced feature, Sumsub ensures no fraudster can pass the identity verification check, bolstering the security and trust of businesses and their customers.

Beyond identity verification, the deepfake detector offers protection to businesses across various sectors. Notably, FinTech, payments, crypto, and online gambling platforms, which are particularly vulnerable to deepfake fraud, stand to benefit immensely from the new tool. Furthermore, Sumsub’s deepfake detector acts as a bulwark against the rising trend of AI-generated fraud, providing a robust layer of protection in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

The geographical distribution of deepfake fraud is a growing concern as per Sumsub’s reports. Spain, Great Britain, and the U.S. were the top countries affected in 2022. The rate of deepfake fraud rose dramatically in Canada, the U.S., Germany, and the UK from 2022 to Q1 2023. Sumsub aims to combat this global menace with its upgraded deepfake detection technology.

Sumsub CTO and co-founder Vyacheslav Zholudev said, “We noticed the emerging deepfake trend long ago and started building solutions to fight this rapidly evolving type of fraud. Our new advanced deepfake detector reinforces our core KYC product and commitment to further enhancing the AI-driven technologies built into our anti-fraud solution.”

Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin, Head of AI/ML at Sumsub, also expressed his concern, “As we face the ever-evolving trends in generative AI and AI-driven fraud, we anticipate AI technologies to develop quickly, and more sophisticated fraud to emerge, affecting even more industries. Sumsub is here to fight all kinds of synthetic fraud. Our team is working on a solution to detect a large scope of AI-generated fraud beyond deepfakes.”
