Hyundai has launched an innovative system that will allow US drivers to pay for items using their vehicle’s touchscreen.

The Korean car manufacturer has partnered with Parkopedia to launch Hyundai Pay’s first service, which lets drivers locate, reserve, and pay for parking at 6000 designated locations – all from the comfort of their vehicles.

The system will launch initially alongside the 2024 Hyundai Kona, before a further nine models receive the service, via model year changes or over-the-air updates.

Olabisi Boyle, VP, product planning and mobility strategy, Hyundai Motor North America, said: “With Hyundai Pay’s scalable e-commerce platform, we can elevate customer convenience and extend their digital reach by making every day needs—like finding and paying for parking—easier, swifter and safer via our connected-car, integrated-cockpit and secure-transaction technology.”

The service keeps personal details secure using tokenisation, which replaces card account details with a unique digital identifier, or token. The system uses Hyundai’s Blue Link Plus connected car service that is also used to connect people’s cars to smart devices, like smartwatches or smart speakers.

The move is seen as the latest effort from global car manufacturers in their multi-year effort to make in-car payments a real thing.
