Artificial intelligence is not new to regulated financial services. Machine learning, automation and pattern recognition have long been embedded in systems supporting risk management and operational oversight.
According to Red Oak, what has changed is the growing assumption that AI should now be embedded everywhere, often without sufficient consideration of what that means inside a tightly regulated compliance environment.
That assumption introduces risk. Compliance is not about probability or estimated outcomes. It is built on precision, consistency and auditability. If the same question produces a different answer tomorrow, or no clear answer at all, that is not innovation. It is regulatory exposure. Yet many so-called AI-native platforms are designed by starting with the model and then attempting to retrofit compliance controls afterwards, reversing the order that regulated firms actually need.
A compliance-first approach recognises that AI has value, but only in clearly defined parts of the workflow. Approximation can be useful during early-stage document review, initial data classification or the identification of potential anomalies that require human assessment. In these areas, AI can help teams work faster and focus attention where it matters most.
However, there are critical points in every compliance process where approximation is unacceptable. Final approval decisions, regulatory recordkeeping, books and records obligations and end-to-end audit trails require determinism, not probability. In these contexts, hallucinations, model drift or inconsistent outputs are not minor technical issues. They become regulatory liabilities that firms may struggle to explain under scrutiny.
This distinction underpins the concept of compliance-grade AI. Rather than systems that “learn” compliance behaviour over time through opaque processes, compliance-grade AI is designed to execute clearly defined compliance tasks within strict governance boundaries. Every interaction must be captured and tied to the compliance record, every output must be reproducible and defensible, and every workflow must include appropriate controls and human validation where required. Importantly, AI should align with a firm’s existing policies, not force those policies to adapt to the technology.
Governance is the safety net that makes this possible. During a recent fireside discussion, Red Oak CTO Rick Grashel compared AI controls to aviation safeguards: no one would fly without redundant systems, backup controls and a black box. Yet many AI tools entering compliance workflows lack equivalent protections. Without configurable workflows, validation checkpoints and fallback mechanisms, AI does not reduce risk. It quietly compounds it.
The most pressing risk facing compliance teams today is not that they will ignore AI altogether. It is that they will adopt it too quickly, under pressure, without fully understanding how it alters their regulatory responsibilities. AI should enhance existing compliance processes, not force teams to accept new forms of risk simply to keep pace with industry trends.
After more than 15 years focused on compliance-grade outcomes, Red Oak’s position is clear: AI is a powerful tool, but only when it is deployed deliberately, governed rigorously and used where it genuinely adds value. As firms look ahead, the key question is not whether AI belongs in compliance. It is whether they can explain it, defend it and govern it when regulators ask the hard questions.
